Citizen Science Zurich

Citizen Science Zurich is part of Scientifica 2023: Citizen Science – get involved in research!

Citizen Science Zürich is part of this year's Scientifica 2023. Together with three projects centered around air quality, animal welfare, and urban biodiversity we will bring Citizen Science closer to the public. Visit us on the weekend of 2 and 3 September at our booth in the Zentrum UZH. Not only exciting projects are waiting for you, but also great prizes which you can win.

Research institutions are increasingly collaborating with people who possess the life experiences required to bridge certain knowledge gaps. In other instances, they are partnering with individuals who want to learn more about a particular subject and are eager to lend a hand. We refer to this approach as "Citizen Science". Do you want to get involved? Visit our booth, where three project teams will share their work:

Know the Air You Breathe

The project researches indoor and outdoor air quality. Thanks to low-cost measuring devices, Citizen Scientists can collect their own air data. The goal of the project is to identify patterns of air pollution and thereby minimize health risks. At the same time, it can raise awareness of the often neglected issue of air pollution.

More information about the project you can find on their project page.

SchweinErleben (pic experience)

This project investigates the behavior of domesticated pigs in a semi-natural environment. Video recordings allow Citizen Scientists to identify and classify pig behavior. The goal is to increase understanding of the animals’ needs, improve the commercial management of pigs, and educate schools and the general public.

More information about the project you can find on their project page.

StadtWildTiere and Wilde Nachbarn

These two initiatives research wildlife in urban areas. Using public reporting platforms and targeted research, Citizen Scientists record the occurrence and distribution of wildlife. The data makes it possible to promote and protect biodiversity in cities and villages. The platforms also offer tips for observing, protecting and promoting wildlife in urban areas.

More information you can find on StadtWildTiere and Wilde Nachbarn Schweiz.
